Meet the Founder, Gary Beresford…

Gary Beresford is the Founder and creator of Custom Wood Artist.

He has built up an incredible portfolio from his workshop in Derbyshire, transforming his houseboat into a creative Fret work haven. It has become a hub where the most beautiful pieces of bespoke commissioned art have made their way into homes all over the world.

Gary’s Story…

After having a bad accident on a motorcycle (leaving Gary with more problems that he cares to admit to), a doctor at the Brain Trauma Unit in the UK’s John Radcliffe hospital suggested that he find a hobby to help rebuild his hand – eye co-ordination, which at the time was really very poor. In fact, it was so bad the hospital staff took metal cutlery away from Gary to stop him from consistently stabbing himself in the face while trying to eat… strange times indeed!

After leaving the hospital Gary tried various hobbies, but could not get to grips with most things. Then a couple of years later he found the art of “Fret Work” quite by accident.

Fret Work is done with the aid of a small hand held saw, known as a “Coping saw” or “Fret saw”. This saw enables a good custom wood artist like Gary to cut intricate shapes into thin wood and veneers.

All kinds of custom wood gifts and items can be made this way, from flat 2D pictures to 3D clocks and landscapes that look identical to the real thing, including buildings such as churches or cathedrals.

Gary also has a small wood lathe and his “turning” skills have produced some great successes, such as custom wood writing pens. The wood pens he makes are all different as he uses a process of “segmentation”, which is the cutting and gluing of various woods together to attain a unique pen like no other.
